How to Lower Nitrates in a Saltwater Aquarium

In order to bring the nitrate levels down in your saltwater aquarium you will want to perform a water change. You will want to move all of your decorations or live rock around and sift through all of the live sand or substrate in your aquarium. The reason for the high nitrates is because something is decaying in your fish tank.

If your nitrates are really high and you have been doing water changes at least once every 2 weeks, you might not be changing enough water. You will want to make sure that you change at least 20-25% of the water. You will also want to sift through the sand or use a siphon tube with a net on the end to catch the sand at the end of the siphon tube.

You will want to feed your fish a lot less. The main reason for high nitrates is that you're over feeding your fish which is creating more fish waste and more decaying food at the bottom of the fish tank.

Perform a water change and sift through the sand. You will want to remove the algae from your fish tank before you drain any of the water. You will also want to sift through the sand before removing water to get all of the decaying food off of your substrate.

If it's been a couple of days and the nitrates are still high you will need to perform another water change until the nitrate level starts to slowly drop down to the normal level.

You will want to make sure that you change your filter cartridge as well. The carbon in your filter cartridges will help to bring down your nitrate level. If it's been more than 2 weeks since you have changed the filter cartridges, you will want to replace them at this time.
